Expanding Our Service

Update 6/7/24

All CSA share purchases are now closed. But we hope you remember us at the Wheeler Farmer’s Market or for another CSA project in 2025!

In an effort to get our vegetables to our community, family and friends who can’t always make it to the farmers market, Orenda Urban Farm is starting a limited Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project for the 2024 season!

What and When is the CSA?

A CSA is a purchased share of the season’s vegetable harvest. CSA projects vary dependent on the farm but our CSA is a weekly box of vegetables freshly harvested from the field. Every box of a purchased CSA share will contain between 5-9 vegetables depending on the time of year. Early in the season it can take vegetables like carrots a month to even germinate, while later in the season it can be as short as seven days. Because of this, early season CSA shares may be a bit smaller than those available later in the season as the weather warms. By season’s end each CSA box is worth an average of $30. Our CSA begins June 2nd and runs until October 26th, spanning a full 21 weeks! We also offer a half share of the same boxes harvested every week for a total of 10 weeks.

Why Invest in a CSA?

Just as there are many reasons to shop at the farmers market, there are many reasons to join a CSA. By purchasing a share, you are investing in us as your farmers. CSA shares are purchased at the beginning of the season, paying for the full length of the season’s vegetables. This allows us to make the purchases we need to make in order to grow. This investment in our farm goes toward things like seeds, compost, amendments and new socks to replace those I wore holes into. Bottom line: a purchase of a CSA share is an investment in Orenda Urban Farm. Your money goes to your local farmer and local food grown organically without chemicals. Ever. That is a responsibility we take very seriously.

So what are we growing?

Being a micro farm and only growing on just over a quarter acre, we don’t have the space to grow things like pumpkins or some of the longer growing melons out there. However, we strive to grow the staples your kitchen needs while also growing seasonally. This means cool weather crops during the spring and autumn months like kale, spinach and radishes. In the summer months we grow the tomatoes and peppers we’ve so been waiting for, along with a host of other veggies like carrots, lettuce, and beets. With any luck there will be a few interesting surprises tucked in the boxes every few weeks.

Costs?

The cost of each CSA is dependent on a couple of factors. One option is a full season of vegetables that will span 21 weeks, from June 2nd to October 26th. A half share will be harvested every week and will span 10 weeks from June 2nd to August 10th. Another factor is whether or not you want your vegetables delivered. For this we can only deliver within twenty minutes of the farm and we charge an extra $5 per box delivered. We ask for a cooler with ice packs left on the porch in order to deliver to folks that aren’t home. Members can also pick up from us at our location in the Ballpark neighborhood in Salt Lake City. This allows us to keep your veggies cold and fresh which increases shelf life and helps the veggies to maintain their flavor. We work very hard to bring you the best veggies we can so we recommend this option. The day of the week for pick up will be set by the start of season and will be more amenable to those who can’t make a Saturday/Sunday morning Farmers Market.
